Last Updated: March 20, 2006

San Cristobal is not the tallest volcano in Nicaragua, but it is the most massive. It is locally known as El Viejo, which translates as "the old one."

Momotombo

Momotombo is stratovolcano near the center of the volcanic arc that passes through western Nicaragua. Last month geophysicists noted a slight increase in the number of earthquakes beneath the volcano. Earlier this month the number of earthquakes increased to a high level, reaching 100 per day and including events as large as magnitude 3.5. Residents near the volcano reported that the cloud of gas above the summit changed from white to black shortly after the magnitude 3.5 earthquake. Earthquake activity continues at high levels.

Cosigüina

Coseguina is located in the northwest corner of Nicaragua. It is a basaltic shield volcano with a large central collapse crater that contains a lake. This crater is about 1.24 by 1.55 miles (2 by 2.5 km) in diameter and 1,640 ft (500 m) deep. It was formed during a huge eruption on January 22, 1835 that covered a large area of Central America and Mexico with ash and pumice .This mighty eruption deposited ash as far as Mexico City, some 1400 km to the north and Jamaica, which is 800 miles (1300 km) to the east.
