Kinarejo Village is about 3 miles (5 km) south of Merapi's summit. The village is built on pyroclastic deposits (falls, flows, and surges) of unknown age. Although construction is forbidden in this area some residents are building new homes. Most people wish to live on their family's traditional lands and near their fields. Residents must be evacuated from this area during volcanic unrest. |

Massive deposits from pyroclastic flows are most common. A layer of coarse pumice (at about eye level) marks a pyroclastic fall deposit from an eruption about 2,000 years before present. The dark-colored pyroclastic flow that caps the section is less than 200 years old. |

Some layers contain charcoal which is used to date the deposit using the carbon-14 method. |
