Colima Volcano

This is Colima volcano, in Western Mexico. It is active, and you can see a very recent dark-colored flow that came down the side facing the photographer. The surface in the foreground is what is called "block lava", and you can see part of a person for scale at left. Only a few months before this photo was taken a small pyroclastic flow came down the gully to the left. The city of Colima is nearby and is home to more than 2,000,000 people - Colima has the potential to be very dangerous.
