University of Miami Geodesy

The Geodesy Laboratory is a research program within the Marine Geology and Geophysics Division of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences-UM. They apply satellite based geodetic measurements to a variety of scientific problems, including crustal deformation and plate motion, volcano monitoring, and coastal stability.

The Geodesy Lab at UM is actively involved in volcano monitoring research, with a long term goal of reducing volcano hazard in populated areas near active volcanoes. Researchers from the University of Miami, in conjunction with the Instituto Geofisico del Peru, have installed a permanent Global Positioning System receiver on El Misti, in southern Peru.
