Nikko-Shirane

The green hills and mountians surrounding Nikko

Nikko is a shield volcano. All five of the historic eruptions have been at the Shirane-san lava dome. They began in 1625 and the most recent was in 1889. Most of the historic eruptions have been moderate to moderate-large in size (VEI=2-3) and phreatic. All photographs courtesy of and copyrighted by Mike Lyvers.

The next three photos are of Nikko's waterfalls.
