Lesson at a glance: Students learn the types of tephra and their significance.

Key Concept: A variety of ejected volcanic products, or tephra, can be produced during Hawaiian eruptions. Tephra is classified by size, texture, and composition. The distribution and type of tephra can be used to locate the eruption source and describe the style of the eruption.

Lesson Objectives: The students will:

  1. identify the different types of tephra

  2. describe the origin of different types of tephra.
