Background: -- Tephra

Three things come out of volcanoes: lava, tephra, and gas. Keeping that in mind makes classifying volcanic materials much easier.

This lesson describes tephra. Tephra is all ejecta blown through the air or water by explosive volcanic eruptions. The size of the volcanic particles is the primary basis for subdivision.
