More Convection Demonstrations (Grades K-3)

Nature and everyday life provide examples of convection that are readily observable. For example, watch smoke rise above a smoke stack. Under certain atmospheric conditions, clouds will grow and rise vertically. Tea diffusing from a tea bag often defines a circular pattern. Wax in a lava lamp rises, flows laterally, and then sinks as it cools.
