This view shows a number of large lava flows near the summit of Volcan Pacaya. These flows are almost as thick as they are wide, which is a common situation for viscous lava on strato volcanoes. The steep margins of the flows are also common on this type of lava and indicate a high yield strength. Channels developed as the margins stopped flowing (to form levees; L) while the central parts kept going. Each of these flows is 15-20 m thick.
