Hanauma
Koko Head Crater, Hanauma Bay Craters, and Koko Craters formed along a
fissure.
Magma rising in the fissure came in contact with sea water and produced
violent explosions. Enough ash accumulated to fill in the ocean floor
south of the Koolau Range (eroded mountains in middle of photograph).
North of the east point of Oahu is Rabbit Island, another
tuff cone
formed during the
renewed volcanism stage
of volcanism. Slide courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey.
