Poas Volcano, Costa Rica

This is a close-up of the innermost pit at Poas Volcano. You can catch a glimpse of the sulfurous boiling pond, at this time about 50 m across. The area around the pond is built up of ash, into which heavy rainfall has cut numerous gullies. The light-colored specks are actually large boulders that have been thrown out during numerous explosions.
