The Sabatini volcanic group in west central Italy is shown in this NASA shuttle photo. The large dark circular area in the lower right is Lake Bracciano. The shifting of two blocks appear to have caused the sinking of the area now occupied by Lake Bracciano. Geologic and volcanic history of the Sabatini region show that pyroclastic and maar forming eruptions last took place about 100,000 years ago.
