Location of the Whangarei and Puhipuhi volcanic centers. Modified from Johnson and others (1989) and Smith (1989).
The Whangarei volcanic center consists of vents southeast of the town of Whangarei, scoria cones just north of town, and lava flows east of the city. There have not been any eruptions at Whangarei in historic time. The volcanic field is suspected to have been active in the last 10,000 years.
