About 450 years ago, there was an eruption on Mount St. Helens. A mudflow (lahar) emptied into the lower entrance of Ape Cave. It plugged the bottom of the cave. |

Over time, water dripped on this sandy floor and washed some of the sand away. This left a fairyland of "sand castles." |

Unfortunately, people have walked on most of these sand castles and knocked them down. So, protect the few that remain. Watch where you step! |
