Sand Castles

About 450 years ago, there was an eruption on Mount St. Helens. A mudflow (lahar) emptied into the lower entrance of Ape Cave. It plugged the bottom of the cave.

Over time, water dripped on this sandy floor and washed some of the sand away. This left a fairyland of "sand castles."

Unfortunately, people have walked on most of these sand castles and knocked them down. So, protect the few that remain. Watch where you step!
