Space Shuttle photo STS059-0226-0088 of Savo taken on April 17, 1994.

Savo is a stratovolcano a short distance offshore from Guadalcanal. Two historic eruptions, in 1568 and 1835-1850, were explosive and generated pyroclastic flows. During one episode of the most recent eruption nuees ardentes killed everyone living on the island. Later, in the same eruption, nuees ardentes killed everyone except three survivors.
